PEORIA, Ill -- Early autopsy results indicate Peoria Councilman Gary Sandberg died of heart failure possibly related to the heat.
That has medical experts sending a warning to people with heart conditions, especially those taking multiple medications.
Certain medications cause a loss of hydration, according to Doctor Sudhir Mungee with Heart Care Midwest.
"Also, people who have valve problems, if they suddenly get dehydrated, soon they can have problems such as collapse and passing out,” according to Dr. Mungee. “So I think it is important for people who have heart conditions who have multiple medications to talk to their doctor, but more important to avoid extreme heat."
Dr. Mungee says people with heart conditions should stay indoors and keep hydrated.
Early signs of heart failure include an upset stomach, loss of energy, and a weakness of the legs.
