EAST PEORIA, Ill -- The Red Cross has been called to help an East Peoria family after an early Tuesday morning fire.
Authorities were called to the scene at 118 West Bluff just before 3:30 am. There were reports of heavy smoke coming out of the front of the house.
The fire was isolated in the kitchen area and was put out in a matter of minutes.
"The biggest thing that we're certainly happy with is the fact that they did have working smoke detectors that did awaken them," said East Peoria Assistant Fire Chief John Knapp. "They were asleep at the time of the fire. Without the smoke detectors, obviously we probably wouldn't of been so fortunate.
Damage to the home is estimated at $50,000.
