Hydrant flushing scheduled for East Peoria

September 10, 2013 Updated Sep 10, 2013 at 1:02 PM CDT

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – Annual water main flushing and fire hydrant testing began Tuesday in East Peoria.

The flushing will last for approximately one month. Officials said the process can cause rusty-colored water but that the water is safe to drink. The discoloration usually clears up within a few hours.

The city is asking residents to avoid running tap water and using the washing machine or dish washer while flushing is being done in the area. Washing light colored items during or immediately after hydrant flushing can cause staining.

There is no set schedule for the flushing. Residents should watch for city crews in their neighborhood to know when the inspections are occurring.
