CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced that in 2012, more than $44 million was recovered from 20,000 people who wrongfully collected unemployment insurance.

Federal tax returns were taken from those who refused IDES' offer of a payment plan.

The IDES says that they have asked the IRS to seize an additional $266 million from 71,000 who have defrauded the IDES.

This is now the second year that the IDES can garnish federal tax returns following reforms enacted in 2011.
