SPRINGFIELD, Ill -- State Treasurer Dan Rutherford says his office is in possession of dozens of unclaimed military medals including ribbons, awards, and more than a dozen purple hearts. Most of the items were left in safety deposit or lock boxes after service members passed away.
The Treasurer's website lists the names of people whose lock box contents are being held.
Rutherford talks about the unclaimed medals, "If you go there, you click on it, you can see the names of whose the lock box is with, what city it is from, and if you believe it's someone you known or you can help find, click on it and it will take you through the whole process to claim this."
State Treasurer Rutherford says among those being sought are Craig Clanin of Astoria, and Constance Cooper of Farmington. Belongings of Bishop Haynes of Mattoon and Linda K. Moore of Peoria are also being held.
To see if you have unclaimed items visit www.treasurer.il.gov. Rutherford says he is also working with Veteran organizations in order to locate the proper owners of the military medals and awards.
