NORMAL, Ill. -- An Illinois State University student is being treated at a Twin Cities hospital after police say she was shot near campus early Saturday morning.
Authorities say the shooting occurred on the 700 block of North Adelaide Street, just before 3 a.m.
Police were called to the scene after witnesses say a fight broke out. The situation escalated quickly, and ended with gunshots.
The victim was taken to Advocate Bromenn Medical Center and treated for what appeared to be non life-threatening injuries.
Students received an emergency alert text roughly two hours after the shooting occurred.
One resident heard the gun shots and immediately locked the door.
"When I first heard it I was like was that really a gun? Could it have been a gun? Like I kinda tried to tell myself it wasn't. Ya know I was kind of in disbelief at first and kinda ya know? We were all a little shaken up," said local resident, Shelby Temple.
Another local resident was in disbelief.
"I was just shocked. It was ridiculous. I didn't think anything like that could happen in this area," said Brent Long.
University directors are doing their best to assure students and their families campus is safe.
ISU President Al Bowman has released a statement on the university's website.
"Although this is an unfortunate way to begin the new school year, it is important you know that your well-being is our top priority and that Illinois State will always quickly provide emergency information throughout the campus community."
University officials and police say they are working side by side to comfort students, and the victim's family.
"Our critical response team went to the hospital where the student was being treated. Our vice president of student affairs actually met with the student and the families and we provided and array of services to the family and friends including counseling services and help with class," said ISU Spokesman, Jay Groves.
Police have made no arrests in the case.
The victims name has not been released.
The gunman is described as a black male, wearing all black clothing, armed with a handgun.
Authorities say he was last seen driving a tan, mid-sized sedan.
