Pat Brady has resigned as the Illinois GOP Chairman.

Brady announced his resignation Tuesday amid controversy over his support for gay marriage.

Earlier this year, Brady voiced his support for a same-sex marriage proposal that is pending in Springfield.

His position differed from the state GOP platform which said marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman. Brady said he made the endorsement personally, not as Republican chairman.

Party Vice-Chair Carol Smith Donovan will serve as Acting Chairman until a new Chairman has been selected by the Illinois Republican State Central Committee.
