PEORIA, Ill. -- State Senator Darin LaHood is backing a group that is pushing for tort reform in Illinois.

The group is called "Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch."

Members said small businesses are being hurt by frivolous lawsuits. They said just one abusive lawsuit can mean the difference between whether a small business succeeds or fails.

"What I've suggested is we pass a number of these measures in Springfield to give people confidence that we get it in Illinois and we're on the right track," said Lahood, (R) 37th District. "If a business can open in Iowa or Indiana or Illinois, and the cost of doing business is higher in Illinois, they're not gonna come to Illinois."

The Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch said seven in ten small business owners say that a lawsuit would force them to reduce benefits to current employees and hold back on hiring new ones.
