PEORIA, Ill. -- A trip down the Illinois River was just part of what some members of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association took part in this weekend.

During the barge trip they learned about everything from how the the vessel works to what it carries.

There were speakers on board from ADM, Growmark and the lock and dam.

A barge is very beneficial to businesses when moving product from one place to the next.

"Fifty to sixty percent of our product is shipped on barges, so the river is important to our business," said Mark Reznik, Peoria Plant Manager. "When the river is closed down like it was during the record floods, it slows down production and we had to make other arrangements for truck, which isn't beneficial for our business."

Most business are shipping their product to different areas in the country or even overseas.
