SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Chicago Democratic Senator Ira Silverstein has introduced legislation that would make it illegal to smoke inside a vehicle if a child is present.

Silverstein hopes the potential law will protect kids from secondhand smoke.

If the measure is passed, violators would face a $100 fine but police would not be able to pull drivers over for just a smoking violation.

Six other states currently have similar bans.
