Illinois State Trooper killed in the line of duty

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. -- An Illinois State Trooper is dead after being struck by a truck-tractor semi while conducting a traffic stop just after 9 a.m. Monday morning.

Trooper Kyle Deatherage was pronounced dead at the scene after he was struck on I-55 near milepost 62, 55 miles north of St. Louis.

Illinois State Police Director Hiram Grau release a statement regarding the fatal crash.

"It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I announce the tragic death of Trooper Deatherage," said Grau. "Trooper Deatherage left a legacy of courage and duty and today he is surrounded by the respect of his fellow officers and by the love of his friends and family. Our hearts are heavy with grief, but they are also strengthened by Trooper Deatherage's brave calling."

Trooper Deatherage had been a member of the Illinois State Police since May 2009 and was assigned to District 18 as a motorcycle officer.

He was 32 years old and is survived by his wife, Sarah, and two young children.
