NORMAL, Ill. -- In one of his final acts as Illinois State University president, Al Bowman appointed Larry Lyons, deputy director of Intercollegiate Athletics, to a 3-year term as athletics director beginning July 1.

Gary Friedman, Illinois State University’s director of Intercollegiate Athletics since May 2011, announced Monday he will resign, effective June 30. Friedman said the position was "simply not the right fit".

During Friedman’s tenure, ISU's Athletics Department launched a $25 million construction and renovation project for Hancock Stadium, the facility’s first major upgrade since it was built 50 years ago.

Lyons is in his 26th year at Illinois State. He currently oversees business, facility and external operations, human resources and the Weibring Golf Club.
