SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Secretary of State Jesse White announced Friday that he has awarded over $5 million in adult literacy grants to organizations state wide.
The grants are designed to give organizations the tools they need to help students develop their reading, math, writing and language skills.
White says that nearly 22,000 students are served by adult literacy programs in Illinois and that their are more than 8,500 volunteer tutors to serve them.
Locally, Peoria's Common Place PSFily Learning Center is receiving a grant of $61,500 and the Regional Office of Education is receiving a grant of $60,000.
The YWCA in Pekin is also receiving a grant of $31,000.
