PEORIA, Ill. -- Local community heroes will now have a little help when they go to buy or sell a home.

Jim Maloof realty held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Homes for Heroes program on Tuesday.

The program was created after 9/11 as a way to help our nations heroes when it comes to real estate. Heroes who qualify for the program include service members, veterans, police, firefighters, and others who you may not think about.

"You know there are EMTs, there are pharmacists, there are people who serve at the Red Cross and this open to them as well," said Patti Smith, Homes for Heroes team member. "Their jobs are hard, their jobs are difficult, and their jobs are part of what makes our community work."

The program operates all across the United States and so far has save citizens more than $2 million.
