CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- The man accused of killing a dozen people during a shooting at a Colorado theater can plead "not guilty by reason of insanity".

A Colorado judge accepted the plea from James Holmes on Tuesday.

Holmes is accused of opening fire in the packed theater last summer, killing 12 people and injuring 70 more.

He faces numerous murder and attempted murder charges, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

The insanity plea means Holmes will undergo a lengthy mental evaluation.
