PEORIA, Ill. -- Staff at a community hospital are celebrating "National Doctor's Day" by donating to a local non-for-profit.

Kindred Hospital Peoria presented a $1000 check to the South Side Mission.

This is the second year the hospital staff has made a donation in recogniton of Doctor's Day.

The money would usually be used to buy doctors gifts to thank them for the hard work, but administrators say staffers asked that the money be donated instead.

"We just felt that rather than get a physician a shirt that might sit in a closet for three years and never get worn, we would use those funds for people that really could make use of them," said Bob Wright, CEO Kindred Hospital Peoria.

The South Side Mission says $1000 can provide roughly 470 hot meals for the poor.
