WASHINGTON, DC -- Illinois Senator Mark Kirk is returning to the US Senate almost a year after suffering a stroke.
Kirk was elected to the Senate in 2010 to fill the remainder of President Barack Obama's term.
On Thrursday he plans to walk up the steps of the Senate to be greeted by Vice President Joe Biden.
The Republican suffereed a stroke last January and has spent many months enduring intense rehabilitation. .
Eight weeks ago he climbed 37 flights of stairs at the Willis Tower in Chicago.
Kirk's staff has kept him briefed on Senate business over the past few months.
