GALESBURG, Ill. -- The Knox College community is trying to heal after the loss of one of their own in an apparent hit and run crash.

Meanwhile, the woman charged in connection with the death appeared in court via video on Monday.

The Knox County State's Attorney alleges that 33-year-old Smith was driving near Knox College early Sunday morning when she struck Seminat Lawani, also referred to as Tundun. Smith has been charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident and two counts of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence.

Knox College officials say Lawani was a junior, and they are offering grief counselors for their students.

"We certainly have nothing but the deepest sympathy that goes out to the Lawani family," said Knox College Communications Officer Sean Riedel. "That is a unified experience for all of us here on campus. This was a deep loss to the entire community."

Smith's bond was send at $100,000. She will appear in Knox County court again on November 5.
