Knoxville High Freshman Killed in Car Crash involving Alcohol

Authorities say Brandon Melton was pronounced dead at the scene at the corner of Roberts and Richmond Streets in Gilson, two other 15-year-olds were taken to St. Mary's Hospital.

The 19-year-old driver, Jose Beltran faces DUI charges, consumption of alcohol by a minor and failure to reduce speed, and is being held in the Knox County Jail.

Authorities were called to the scene just before 3:30 Friday morning, they say the vehicle hit a power pole, and flipped several times before landing on its side.

There is a candlelight vigil planned for Melton Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Knoxville High School football field.
