More than $16.9 million in grants have been awarded to Illinois highway projects.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the federal funding Wednesday, saying the money is a critical investment for the state.

"Transportation investments like these will create jobs and improve the quality of life for Illinois residents as well as strengthen the state's economy," said Secretary LaHood.

"At a time when states are facing serious budgetary constraints, these grants will help fill a critical need," said Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez. "Investments like these are immediate and long-lasting and will help create jobs."

States were invited to apply for the federal funding, which totaled approximately $13 billion.  More than 1,800 requests were received from municipalities in every state.

The Federal Highway Administration grant will be used for several bridge and interstate repairs and historic Route 66 improvements.
