WASHINGTON D.C. -- Outgoing US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood expects to officially enter retirement soon.

LaHood believes the Senate will confirm his successor, Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, in the next couple of weeks.

Mayor Foxx is President Obama's first African American nominee among his second term cabinet appointees.

LaHood is one of a few Republicans in the President's Cabinet and said much has been accomplished.

"I think safety," said LaHood, "our safety agenda, our focus on making sure all travel is safe in America has been a very important part of our agenda."

LaHood said he hasn't had time to reflect on his tenure, but hopes to do so in July and August.
