EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- A chilling reminder of the true power of flood waters remains in East Peoria nearly a year after disaster struck.

Four families were forced to move last April after a mudslide nearly swallowed their homes.

Thursday, those homes on the 100 block of Kaitlyn Court are still standing but remain unsafe to live in.

The East Peoria City Council said no tax payer dollars would be spent to help the displaced families, since the homes were built on unsafe ground.

Community members organized fundraisers last summer.

The families also filed for federal aid.
