PEORIA, Ill -- The last full-service grocery store in Peoria's 1st District will be closing next month.

Aldi has announced that it will be closing two stores and opening another. The Peoria store at 210 s. Western St. and the East Peoria store at 250 S. Main St. will both close January 23rd.

They will be replaced by a new Aldi store at 251 Clock Tower Dr. in the East Peoria Levee District, which will open on January 24th.

Peoria residents in the 1st District were concerned.

"You have to go way out to get stuff that you need. We need it open over here," said Jill Jones. "It's a huge inconvenience."

1st District councilwoman Denise Moore said that the store was an integral part of the community.

"There's no full service grocery that services the Warehouse District, the downtown or anything like that," said Councilwoman Moore. "So it's very devastating to the folks who travel far. Many of them walk here to obtain groceries. You might see a lot of them getting on the bus. It's devastating."

Councilwoman Moore says bringing another grocery store to the 1st District is now one of her top priorities.

A representative from Aldi indicated that no jobs will be lost. All employees of the affected stores will be relocated.
