NORMAL,Ill. -- The Children's Discovery Museum in Normal draws in tens of thousands of visitors every year. That's due largely in part to the efforts of one woman, Shari Buckellew.
Buckellew founded the Children's Discovery Museum in 1988.
Since then, the museum's size, budget, and staff have grown.
Buckellew stepped down as executive director last year, and currently teaches business at Illinois State University.
She says classrooms and museums are the perfect pair for lifelong learning.
"The two of them combined can make a difference in how a child learns and continues to love to learn," said Buckellew. "It doesn't turn off that switch of, 'Oh, I'm not good at this, or I'm not good at that.' It basically tells them that they're good at everything. All they have to do is keep wanting to learn."
Shari Buckellew is this year's Bill Houlihan Professional Award winner, named by the Children's Hospital of Illinois.
