Less Americans seeking unemployment benefits

May 8, 2014 Updated May 8, 2014 at 11:56 AM CDT

There is a new sign that the job market is improving.

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell last week.

About 319,000 Americans sought benefits during the week that ended May 3, down by 26,000.

The drop follows two weeks of increases that mostly reflected temporary layoffs around the Easter holiday.

Experts view a decline in jobless benefit applications as a sign the companies are cutting fewer jobs.
