PEORIA, Ill. -- As Christmas comes to a close, one local garden is just getting the party started.

On Wednesday, Luthy Botanical Garden opened up it annual Kwanzaa display.

The display features information on the African American holiday as well as more than 20 plants that originate from Africa.

Organizers say the mixture of culture and botanicals help kids better understand America's rich heritage.

"It's really important for kids to understand that there are other cultures out there. The botanical connection is always good for people. I think it is a good way to get people in touch with nature and feel grounded," said Garden Manager Bob Streitmatter.

The Kwanzaa display is open now through December 30.

Admission is free.
