Local TSA Agents take time to help out victims of Superstorm Sandy

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Survivors of Superstorm Sandy have local TSA agents to thank for the support they received after the storm hit.

On Tuesday, TSA officers at the Central Illinois Regional Airport discussed what they did as volunteers in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

The officers were part of FEMA's "search capacity force," which allows federal employees to be trained and deployed to areas hit by disaster.

The Bloomington volunteers say it's all about the support they can offer to their fellow Americans.

"The human element was what was most touching to them. To think somebody would travel 2,000 miles from their homes and stay on maybe less than adequate conditions just to try and help them out," said TSA Agent Dennis Leezer.

"We worked 12 hour day, 6 days a week, primarily for the whole deployment. So we were tired, but as me and my team members hit the streets and were able to start meeting with survivors that you forget about that and you do what's necessary to help them along," said TSA Agent Brian Armstrong.

The volunteers say they would do it again, and some of their co-workers have expressed interest in joining the program.
