MAPLETON, Ill. -- One local church celebrated a milestone in commitment and longevity.

LaMarsh Baptist Church celebrated its 175th anniversary on Sunday.

The church formed back in 1838, originally meeting in barns and homes.

On Sunday, the congregation remembered its past and honored relatives of those who made it possible.

"There has obviously been good times and bad times," said Pastor David Sexton. "There's been difficult times financially and otherwise. People have just stayed faithful and they continue to come year after year. Churches are closing everywhere all the time and it just speaks volumes for the people of LaMarsh Baptist Church just to be faithful and to continue on during the difficult times."

A proclamation from the City of Peoria was also read, honoring the church for its service in the community.
