EAST PEORIA Ill -- Robein Grade School students honored our country's veterans by sending three of them on a trip of a lifetime.

It was part of the school's first ever Nets for Vets event.

In just one week, the students were able to raise more than $2,000 in donations for the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.

In turn, the students spent two gym periods this week shooting hoops.

Three veterans along with one guardian received the check today, which will help send them to Washington D.C. later this month.

"It's exciting that the kids would take the time and energy to raise that kind of money and honor veterans," said trip guardian and Vietnam veteran, Dan Pagan. "Fortunately, we get to see all of the war memorials out there. It's pretty poignant. It's exciting and we are looking forward to it."

The honor flight trip leaves September 24th and will return later that night.

You can help these veterans make the trip by attending a fund raising event Saturday at Uftring Ford in East Peoria from 10 am to 5 pm.
