PEORIA, Ill. -- Students at Holy Family Junior High are giving thanks and honoring local veterans.

On Thursday, the Holy Family student council sponsored a breakfast for armed service members and their family and friends.

Students prepared the meal and listened to the stories of what the veterans did to serve our country.

"Veterans get recognized in many different ways,” said 7th grader Mylene Evangelista. “This is just one of the ways that we can say thanks to them for risking their lives out on the battlefield."

"I think this is a great thing for the kids,” said army veteran Mark Hill. “They can learn a little about veterans and honor the veterans. I know some get up pretty early and so do their moms and dads to help them. It's been going on here for a few years and I for one really appreciate what they do.”

This is the fifth year the students have held the breakfast and 36 veterans attended the event.
