PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill.--A local teenager is back home after a big trip to Washington DC.
16-year-old Alexa Wesley from Peoria Heights was selected to speak in front of congress about juvenile rheumatoid arthritis last week.
She's advocating for legislation for cost-sharing of medications, better access to the right doctors, and research for a cure.
Wesley says even though she's also fighting the illness, she wants to help those diagnosed in the future.
She says her trip to Congress was more of an educational one, helping spread awareness about juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
Wesley said, "They didn't realize that it affected a lot of people. Some did not know that kids actually got this and they were pretty surprised at some of the stories, how it's affected us with schooling."
Alexa Wesley says she will continue advocating for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
