UNITED STATES -- The looming fiscal cliff is not the only deadline facing Congress.
On December 29th federal emergency unemployment insurance will expire, affecting an estimated 2.1 million people.
In affect since the summer of 2008, it covers those unemployed beyond the initial 25-week regular state program.
The National Employment Law Project estimates that if Congress doesn't renew the program, about 2 million people will abruptly lose federal unemployment insurance January 1st.
It also estimates several million more people will exhaust benefits in 2013 before they can find a job.
Those in this situation will be notified their benefits will end.
