PEORIA, Ill.-- Gardening enthusiasts learned from the best on Saturday at the Luthy Botanical Garden.

The 'New garden design' series classes cover everything from vegetables to flowers, and which ones grow best in this area.

Soil preparation and fertilization techniques are also included in the lessons.

Class instructor and Botanical Garden manager, Bob Streitmatter says the venue is meant to help local gardeners hone their skills, like knowing which perennials to plant.

Streitmatter said, "To often we buy plants and they're a great color and all that and we get them home and you have to nurture them and I like to bring gardeners a palette that they don't have to nurture that they can just plant and let go."

Luthy Botanical garden offers classes and tours throughout the summer.
