MICHIGAN -- Something a little strange is happening in the state of Michigan. Giant puffball mushrooms have been popping up, literally, in several areas.

Exactly why they are suddenly appearing isn't known.

For example in Newaygo, Michigan, this woman was showing off what she'd found in the woods. Her neighbors found more, lots more, of the fungi in the nearby woods.

South of there, in Leslie, Michigan, Ed Delaney found what his wife refers to as a "huge, disgusting white mass" about the size of basketball.

Larger ones were found a few days later.

An expert at Michigan State University says they are clearly giant puffballs, "Calvatia Gigantea', the biggest mushrooms in the world.

However, he says they're not worth anything and he wouldn't advise eating them.
They do give folks something to talk about.
