Almost 140 young professionals got their hands dirty Saturday in a unique competition that raises money for the Heart of Illinois chapter of the United Way

The 2nd annual Generation United Mad Dash started this morning on the Peoria Riverfront. It's a competitive adventure in which teams of participants solve clues and complete various challenges while learning about the community's vital health and human services.

Many of the challenges require them to travel to different locations in Peoria.

"Its very much like an Amazing Race type of adventure," said event coordinator Stephen Peterson. "It's a competition for our participants. They'll go around to different partner agencies and sponsorship sites and do a little challenge, get a completion flag and move on to the next one."

And some of the challenges are unconventional.

"Last year we had to build a boat out of garbage and float across the YMCA pool. It was difficult but it was really fun," said participant Carley Novotny.

The Mad Dash takes between 2 and 3 hours to finish. Last year the event raised $15,000 for Heart of Illinois United Way.
