PEORIA, Ill. -- A Peoria man remains in the hospital following a shooting on the city's south side.

The incident happened just before 5 p.m. Monday in the 1000 block of West Butler Street.

Police said James Burnside,22, was riding his bike when he saw a friend and stopped to talk to him. He said another man came out of the alley and he and his friend exchanged shots.

A witness said she was at her residence when she heard three to four shots. She said she saw the victim run through the backyard across the street, jump the fence and then fall in front of the house.

The victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the back but police said his injuries did not appear to be life threatening. He was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

No arrests have been made and police continue to investigate.
