BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Autopsy results have been released for the Bloomington man who died in an apartment fire Saturday.
According to an autopsy exam from the McLean County Coroner’s Office, preliminary findings indicate that 56-year-old Derrick Garner died as a result of carbon monoxide intoxication due to smoke and soot inhalation.
Firefighters responded to 1003 Arlene Court around 8:30 Saturday morning. Firefighters found flames billowing out of an apartment window.
They quickly put out the blaze and found Garner unresponsive in his bedroom.
Garner did have a serious medical condition that may have contributed to the situation.
Toxicology and electrolyte studies have been ordered.
The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Bloomington Fire Department and State Fire Marshall’s Office.
