PEORIA, Ill. -- The word on Kansas Street is that 44-year-old T.C. Driver of Peoria was waiting for the bus at the intersection of a Wisconsin and Kansas early Thursday morning when he was shot and killed.
It happened right across the street from The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Peoria.
"It's very disheartening to know this happened across the street on the corner from us, but it's comforting to know that the response time is just unbelievably quick," said Executive Director Lesley Matuszak.
Matuszak said she still felt safe walking in to work early Thursday morning and is more than satisfied with the city's efforts to increase the amount of police patrols in the East Bluff.
Residents we spoke with, however, said police protection in the area needs to improve.
They also said the addition of Glen Oak School's playground has invited more young adults and vandalism.
Residents even declined to comment on-camera for fear of retaliation.
They said the neighborhood is no better off than it was 10 years ago and not even the Peoria PD armored car is keeping away drugs and gangs.
Matuszak said she does see criminal activity around the Boys and Girl's Club, but she urges East Bluff residents to report it in an attempt to keep this from happening again.
"We can't expect our elected officials and our police to do it all themselves," said Matuszak. "It's all of our problem, and we need to step up when we see it and call the police."
