MANITO, Ill. -- A fire in rural Manito chased a father and son from their home and left it in ruins on Tuesday.

Authorities were called to 10408 Evergreen Drive on a report of a huge house fire.

The Manito Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from South Pekin, Cincinnati, Schaeferville, Forman and Green Valley.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen.

Fire fighters said access to water presented a challenge in putting out the fire.

"We do not have a fire hydrant anywhere close out here. The fire trucks having to go all the way back to Manito to fill up, so you're talking about eight miles to go back to town to get water and bring out here, which is another reason we got to call so much help is to tank the water out to the fire from town," said Assistant Chief Chris Valentine, Forman Fire Department.

The homeowner, his son and the family pet escaped without injury.

The home is being called a total loss. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
