EAST PEORIA, Ill -- November is prematurity awareness month and the Peoria March of Dimes is doing its part to help make sure every baby born is a healthy one.
The organization held its 27th annual Chef's Auction Tuesday night at the Par-A-Dice Hotel.
The event recognized Peoria's hospitals for their participation in the March of Dimes' 39 week initiative.
"The money we raise is funding research to find out why women are having pre term birth. We've pinpointed three things: Smoking while pregnant, not going to your doctors visits for those nine months, and then the biggest one is scheduling those c-sections and inductions before 39 weeks, so it's great that the hospitals have put a hard stop to that," said Peoria March of Dimes Director Lindsay Rodriguez.
The event drew around 300 people and the organization hoped to raise around $50,000 dollars.
