PEKIN, Ill. -- Pekin officials say the allusive Marigold Medallion is missing from its hiding place, and not because there is a winner.
The medallion is hidden each year in anticipation of the Marigold Festival in Pekin.
Daily clues are given about the medallion's whereabouts and the finder is awarded with a vacation prize package.
Committee members said they found the medallion missing Sunday when they went to check on its secret location.
"The festival has a history of medallion hunt oddities and I would say this is one of them," said committee member and cluemeister Gary Gillis. "It will add to basically the medallion hunt folklore, the mystic going forward. Only time will tell what happened to it. Someone could still call, we'll just have to wait and see."
Committee members said they do have a backup medallion.
If no one comes forward with the original by 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, a new medallion will be hidden and the clues will resume.
