BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- A 40 car pile up on Interstate 55 in Bloomington, left 15 people hospitalized.

None of the injuries are life threatening.

Police say the accident is snow related.

It happened just after 11:00 a.m. Friday morning south of the Market Street exit.

Police say some people had to be cut out of their cars.

Drivers were instructed to avoid the area.

They recommended alternative routes on Business 51 or Veterans Parkway.

"Anyone out there on 55 northbound may want to choose an alternative route, whether that's veterans parkway or another. And then for people that are in the city, just understand that we can see a lot of traffic on veterans parkway we're not use to. Along with the snow conditions which are going to drive up drive times. Something to be aware of," said Bloomington Fire Chief Mike Kimmerling.

Investigators say visibility was low at the time of the pile up, and believe the initial crash involved 7 to 8 vehicles.
