BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The primary election is fast approaching, and the McLean County Sheriff candidates both want your vote.

Jeff Elston and Jon Sandage spoke to a legal secretaries association Tuesday night in Bloomington.

The candidates have both moved up through the ranks of the sheriff's department.

They both said use their expertise and education to improve response time and safety for residents.

"I want to bring a business like approach to the sheriff's department," said Elston. "I want to get more guys out on the road by taking our sergeants that are currently in a position where they're sitting on a desk. I want to get them on the road. "

"One of the first things I want to do is sit down with the employees and get their ideas," said Sandage. "Then I think we're gonna head right into the heroin problem that McLean County's facing"

Current Sheriff Mike Emery will retire at the end of his term.

The primary will be held March 18.
