BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- McLean County sheriff candidates Jeff Elston and Jon Sandage were at the Lincoln Reagan Day Luncheon.

Both Jeff Elston and Jon Sandage are veteran employees of the McLean County Sheriff's Department.

Elston wants more patrols on the streets while Sandage plans to combat a growing drug problem.

"I want to combat the growing heroine and prescription drug problem in our country by expanding our K9 program and by working addiction patrol," said Sandage.

"We've got a way we can move the sergeants off the desk and get them back out on the road," said Elston. "We can get our lieutenants more involved in the actual policing of the business rather than a lot of the administrative functions that they do, so we can put more guys out there."

McLean County's current Sheriff Mike Emery plans to retire at the end of his term.

Emery has endorsed Sandage in the race.
