MCLEAN CO, Ill. -- Lab results confirm a 54-year-old woman is the first flu-related death in McLean County.
Health officials say she did not get the seasonal flu vaccine. Now, they're urging citizens to protect themselves and get a flu shot.
Over the last two weeks, the McLean County Health Department says schools and hospitals are reporting a increase in flu-like illnesses.
Symptoms include a fever of 100.4 or above, severe chills and body aches, dry cough and sore throat.
The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and the Illinois Department of Public Health anticipate a much more active flu season this year.
A season typically runs from October through April, with illnesses peeking in January.
The McLean County Health Department has a limited supply of the vaccine.
