The land of Lincoln will soon be the 20th state in the U.S. to legalize medical marijuana.

On Thursday, Governor Pat Quinn will sign legislation allowing seriously ill patients to use cannabis as treatment.

Patients would need to be diagnosed with at least one of 30 qualifying illnesses including cancer, multiple sclerosis and HIV/AIDS.

The four year pilot program requires patients and caregivers to undergo background checks and sets provisions for state regulated dispensaries.
