Medical marijuana use legal on January 1

PEORIA, Ill. -- Illinois residents can use marijuana for medical use starting January 1.

The new law is a four-year pilot program for patients who suffer from debilitating medical conditions.

The 35 eligible conditions include muscular dystrophy, cancer, multiple sclerosis and HIV - AIDS.

They can buy up to 2.5 ounces every 14 days.

Licensed cultivation and distribution facilities are expected to begin producing medical marijuana and providing it to patients in late 2014.
