PEORIA, Ill -- While some of you may have brought in New Years with a bang, one local family welcomed 2013 with a birth.
"I was due January 5 and last night after dinner, I just started having contractions about 7:00. We got here at 11:30 and he was born right before 2:00," said North Pekin resident and mother Peggy Kelch.
Braydon Scott Newcomb joined the world weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces. And born just before 2 a.m., Braydon got the honor of being the first Central Illinois baby born in 2013.
"I just think that he came at the perfect time and all on his own; he just was ready," said Kelch.
Dad, Larry Newcomb, said he wouldn't change a thing when it comes to the birth of his new son.
"Everybody talks about the hype of the first baby of the year, but when it's all said and done it's pretty neat," said Newcomb. "It's kind of shocking when they tell you you're the first baby."
The parents say after an initial pregnancy scare, they are just glad to have a happy, healthy baby boy.
"I just hope he stays health and grows up," said Kelch.
Newcomb added, "He's fine. He's healthy and he's beautiful, so I'm happy."
Next year's New Years Eve may not be as eventful, although they will have a first birthday party to throw for baby Braydon.
