EAST PEORIA Ill -- It's been a good night for many Central Illinois residents as they discovered that the State of Illinois owes them money for unclaimed property.
The Treasurer's office was in the News 25 studio since 5 pm Tuesday evening taking calls from residents who wanted to see if they have some of the millions sitting in the state's vault.
According to the latest results, their have been a total of 509 calls with 190 of them being hits for forgotten property.
$63 million of unclaimed property from Central Illinois residents has been sitting in the I-Cash vault in Springfield.
Now, hundreds of residents, have already claimed some of it thanks to help from the Illinois State Treasurer's office.
The phones rang off the hook Tuesday night as representatives from the State Treasurer's office manned the phones at the I-Cash Phone-a-Thon.
"What we will do is run their first name and their last name, said manager of custody and safe-keeping of unclaimed property," Jim Crowley. "If it is a female that is calling, we'll run her married name first and then run her maiden name. Also, we run the city she grew up in and the city she lives in now."
I-Cash is the newly promoted program by Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford.
The unclaimed property they are talking about, most commonly, includes items forgotten about or left behind when someone moves or a loved one passes away.
Rutherford is looking to return $19 million in Peoria County and $7 million in Tazewell County alone.
"One of them was an individual who had some stock certificates that apparently the broker did not get them through the mail, and it wound up with is," said Rutherford. "Another was a life insurance policy from a gentleman's mother. There's many sundry ways that someone just wouldn't know about it, and it ends up with us. My job and desire is to get it back into people's purses and wallets."
State representatives said the majority of callers have been between the age of 50 and 75 with about one in three callers being a hit for a claim.
If you did not get a chance to call Tuesday night, tons of property and cash are still unclaimed, and it is not going anywhere any time soon.
Just log on to icash.illinois.gov and type in your name and relatives' to see if you qualify for a claim.
