MORTON, Ill. -- Morton schools are investing over $4 million in the purchase of 125 acres of land on the south end of town.

Unit 709 Superintendent Lindsey Hall said the district anticipates future expansion and wanted to buy the land now before it was either sold to someone else or the price went up.

Hall indicated the location, about a half-mile south of Queenwood Road between Fourth Street and Prairie Creek, was another strong selling point for the district.

"Our enrollment is growing and we're also faced with some issues related to our aging buildings in the district," explained Hall. "The purchase of the land is something that has been that on the agenda for a number of years."

Morton schools will buy the land gradually over a 5-year period. The parcel is currently owned by the Yordy family.
